Thank you so much for registering for Teaching students to graph without using additional class time!

We had a great workshop with Kristen Dotti last night. Whether or not you were in attendance we want you to have access to the workshop because you reserved a ticket. We were thrilled to sponsor the event and wanted to follow up with some of the questions that were asked in the chat.

Questions

  1. Is there a tutorial for getting started in making graphs on DataClassroom?

Yes! It is a publicly available Google Doc and can be found here. It is a series of short YouTube videos useful for teachers or students.

  2. Can we get links to the datasets and slides that Kristen used in her presentation?

    Here they are:

    Kristen’s slides

    Potato Osmosis, Ready-To-Teach Activity

Mosquito Wings dataset (good for t-test)

    Eutrophication example dataset

Antibiotic Use and Resistance, Ready-To-Teach Activity

  3. Does DataClassroom have datasets available that my students can use or do they have to upload their own?

DataClassroom has a library of freely available datasets that is always growing. You can view the library of datasets here when you are logged into the web-app. You can also click the Browse the full list text that is right about the recent datasets list on the dashboard to see them all.

  4. Does each student need an account to use data classroom?

Each student does need an account to log into DataClassroom. They can make an account independently just by visiting the website, or you can create classes (manually, Google Classroom, Schoology, Canvas, Clever).
No personal information is required and our standards for digital privacy exceed even the strongest state and federal privacy laws.

  5. Do teachers need to set up a class on the site for students to use these data sets?

All the datasets are free whether students are in a class you created or visiting independently.

  6. Do all the labs have guided worksheets to go with them like the Antibiotic Resistance Lab?

Only the Ready-To-Teach datasets have fully guided worksheet type activities that go with them. There are currently 36 Ready-To-Teach activities available and they can be found here.

  7. Can you explain Tidy Data?

Tidy Data is a way of setting up a datasheet in a spreadsheet that allows students to get the most out of computer based graphing and analysis. DataClassroom works best with Tidy Data and so do the professional level tools that students are likely to use in the working world or university level courses (i.e. think beyond Excel). You can learn more with this blog post which makes a good reading assignment for students collecting and analyzing their own lab data.
