Real data from real scientists to use in your classroom tomorrow:

Learn how to use new Digital Data Nuggets in the DataClassroom web-app

A workshop by Dr. Elizabeth Schultheis of Data Nuggets and Michigan State University

Full recording of the workshop presented via Zoom on March 22, 2021.

Thank you so much for registering for Real data from real scientists to use in your classroom tomorrow

We had a great workshop with Dr. Elizabeth Schultheis on Monday 3/22/21. Whether or not you were in attendance we want you to have access to the workshop because you reserved a ticket. We were thrilled to sponsor the event and wanted to follow up with some of the questions that were asked in the chat.

Here are some of the questions we received during the workshop and via email.

Questions

  1. Can we get links to the datasets and slides that Dr. Schultheis used in her presentation?

    Here they are:

Springing Forward dataset on DataClassroom (Digital Data Nugget coming soon)

Associated Kellog Biological Station temperature data for more exploration (Google Sheet)

    Presentation Slides

  2. What is the difference between Data Nuggets and DataClassroom?

Data Nuggets are free classroom activities created by scientists at Michigan State University, co-designed by scientists and teachers, designed to bring contemporary research and authentic data into the classroom. Data Nuggets include a connection to the scientist behind the data and the true story of their research. Each pencil and paper based activity gives students practice working with “messy data” and interpreting quantitative information.

DataClassroom is a web-application designed by a former high school teacher and scientist to be used by beginners for graphing and statistics in grades 6-12 and beyond. The app is meant to grow with students so that younger grades will start with graphing and more advanced students will move into descriptive (mean, median, error bars) and inferential statistics (P-values and hypothesis testing). DataClassroom has a Resource Library of free Ready-To-Teach lesson plans and datasets that include Digital Data Nuggets. Data Classroom works on any computer or tablet with an internet connection.

  3. Do you have an introductory Data Nugget to use as a way to introduce Data Nuggets? Do you recommend specific ones to start with?

Your best starting point depends on which grade level you are teaching. There are different Data Nuggets that will be a good fit from 4th grade through university. All Data Nuggets have information about the reading level of the text and each activity is made with three scaffolding levels. This is a great starting point to help figure out which content levels and Data Nuggets would be good starting points for your students.

  4. Do you have premade question sets for the materials?

Yes! All Data Nuggets include a set of questions for analysis and discussion. All DataClassroom Ready-To-Teach datasets also come pre-made with activity questions.

  5. Do you have an info graph that breaks down the different types of statistical tests and what their purpose is to be able to distribute to students so they can have the information in one place?

DataClassroom is working on a statistics guide right now that will do just that. In the meantime, here is the image that appears within the DataClassroom app when choosing a statistical test based on the graph a student has made (below right). The computer is evaluating what type of variables (categorical or numeric) are on the X and Y axis to recommend a particular test Note that these statistical tests assume data that is normally distributed. I have also included a simple chart that high school biology teacher, Dr. Paul Strode put out through HHMI Biointeractive (below left).

6. Is there a cost for my school to use DataClassroom?

DataClassroom has both free and premium features.

Free features include working with all datasets and lesson plans in the Resource Library (including Digital Data Nuggets), graphing, exporting graphs, as well as animated hypothesis tests for chi-square and t-test. Create a free account on dataclassroom.com today to give it a try.

Premium features include the ability for you and your students to upload their own datasets, the ability to create classes and integrate with your LMS (Google Classroom, Schoology, etc), hypothesis testing launched from the graph, and automated help with graphing through Graph Wizard. You can try all features free for 90-days. You will be prompted to start a free trial within the app if you click on a premium feature. No card or additional information is required to begin a trial.

7. How much does a DataClassroom license cost?

DataClassroom licenses can be purchased at the Individual, Teacher, and School level. Teacher and School licenses are typically purchased by schools or school districts. Our base pricing can be found here, and you can email info@dataclassroom.com to get a formal price quote for your scenario.

We employ equity pricing at the School level based on free and reduced lunch percentage with discounts of up to 50% for qualified schools and additional discounts for district purchase.

8. Where can I find Digital Data Nuggets on the DataClassroom web-app?

Click the Browse tab to get the dropdown menu. From there click on Resource Library. Typing in Data Nuggets into the topic or text searches will show the Data Nuggets.

9. Where can I find all the Data Nuggets?
