DataClassroom and the NGSS

DataClassroom supports the foundational ideas of the NGSS

The Next Generation Science Standards* were designed, in part, to guide educators in the process of facilitating “student-led inquiry.” In simpler terms, this just means getting students to actually DO science - which also happens to be one of our guiding principles.

DataClassroom aligns well with not only with the NGSS and the many state-level standards derived from them, but just about any new state-level science education framework (Texas Essential Knowledge and Standards or TEKS, for example).

(Looking for something else? Check out our Standards Alignment page for details including TEKS and VA SOL)

The Next Generation Science Standards are based on the National Research Council’s Framework, which emphasizes three dimensional science learning as an effective basis for science education.

We’ll focus on the first dimension, the Science and Engineering Practices, here.

Science and Engineering PracticeDataClassroom featureHow it relates to the NGSS
1. Asking questions and defining problemsInteractive Analysis, Graph WizardA student's first step while conducting an interactive analysis is to formulate a research question. Graphing with the graph wizard is an exercise in defining a question before making a visual representation.
2. Developing and using modelsGraphing, simulationDataclassroom's intuitive interface makes it easy for students to create professional quality graphs. This includes visualizations of descriptive and inferential statistical models. The simulations allow actual design and use of modelling.
3. Planning and carrying out investigationsHypothesis testing, Interactive analysis, simulationsInteractive hypothesis tests allow students to work through an investigation from hypothesis to conclusion. Using the simulaiton builder, students learn to think in terms of the parameters and experimental design.
4. Analyzing and interpreting dataData upload and visualization The entire platform is built as a set of tools for analyzing and interpreting data. This includes using graphs and visuals as well as the output from descriptive and inferential statistics.
5. Using mathematics and computational thinkingT-tests, ANOVA, linear regression, simulationStudents learn to think with variables and even perform t-tests, ANOVA, and chi-squares tests, regression and more when carrying out investigations.
6. Constructing explanations and designing solutionsReady-to-Teach activities, interactive analysesWhen using the interactive analysis feature, students generate an exportable lab report as they do the math. Ready-To-Teach activities are built to have students using data as evidence when constructing explanations.
7. Engaging in argument from evidenceReady-to-Teach activities, hypothesis testingStudents are prompted to author claims based on the evidence both in Ready-To-Teach activities and hypothesis testing.
8. Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating informationGraph Wizard, hypothesis testingStudents can use the Graph Wizard to turn yes-or-no questions into a selection of the appropriate graph types. DataClassroom makes it easy for student to customize their data visualization, and complete reports based on their analyses.
