Thank you so much for registering for Blinking Out

We had a fun workshop with Dr. Elizabeth Schultheis on Monday 6/7/21. Whether or not you were in attendance we want you to have access to the workshop because you reserved a ticket. We were thrilled to sponsor the event and wanted to follow up with some of the questions that were asked in the chat.

Here are some of the questions we received during the workshop and via email.

Questions

  1. Can we get links to the datasets, materials and slides that Liz and Julia used in their presentation?

    Here they are:

Blinking Out? dataset on DataClassroom (Digital Data Nugget coming soon)

    Materials on Data Nuggets

    Presentation Slides

  2. What is the difference between Data Nuggets and DataClassroom?

Data Nuggets are free classroom activities created by scientists at Michigan State University, co-designed by scientists and teachers, designed to bring contemporary research and authentic data into the classroom. Data Nuggets include a connection to the scientist behind the data and the true story of their research. Each pencil and paper based activity gives students practice working with “messy data” and interpreting quantitative information.

DataClassroom is a web-application designed by a former high school teacher and scientist to be used by beginners for graphing and statistics in grades 6-12 and beyond. The app is meant to grow with students so that younger grades will start with graphing and more advanced students will move into descriptive (mean, median, error bars) and inferential statistics (P-values and hypothesis testing). DataClassroom has a Resource Library of free Ready-To-Teach lesson plans and datasets that include Digital Data Nuggets. DataClassroom works on any computer or tablet with an internet connection.

  3. Can students do statistical tests like t-tests, Chi-square, and ANOVA in DataClassroom?

Yes, and we provide scaffolding to help them choose the right test and interpret the results! DataClassroom can handle a suite of different statistical tests if you want to go beyond just graphical analysis with your students. You can learn how to do statistics with DataClassroom here.

  4. Is R behind the graphs in DataClassroom?

It is not. However, we always strive to have your students make DataClassroom graphs that are pro-quality like you might find in the pages of Nature or Science (which are often made in R).

  5. How do I get my certificate of participation for attending the workshop?

We will email those out this weekend. If you didn’t get yours it was most likely because your school’s email filters block outside emails that are sending to large groups. Email aaron@dataclassroom.com to request yours if you didn’t get it.

  6. Where do I find the pricing for DataClassroom?

DataClassroom licenses can be purchased at the Individual, Teacher, and School level. Teacher and School licenses are typically purchased by schools or school districts. Our base pricing can be found here, and you can email info@dataclassroom.com to get a formal price quote for your scenario.

We employ equity pricing at the School level based on free and reduced lunch percentage with discounts of up to 50% for qualified schools and additional discounts for district purchase.

  7. Where can I purchase the extra large sticky traps like the ones used in the featured firefly study?

You can find those at Great Lakes IPM.

  8. Where can I find Digital Data Nuggets on the DataClassroom web-app?

Click the Browse tab to get the dropdown menu. From there click on Resource Library. Typing in Data Nuggets into the topic or text searches will show the Data Nuggets.
